A Student’s Guide to the Study Friendly Cafes

Moving swiftly on from the issues of online learning detailed in my last post, let’s rally up some enthusiasm for the upcoming re-opening of cafes, restaurants, pubs, etc with a walk through of all my favourite study cafes in Edinburgh. I would deny it if my friends asked me, but I am actually as excited by the prospect of being able to study all day in a café with good cake and coffee as I am by the prospect of sipping a cold beer in the Pear Tree- although the latter does sound delightful as I type away at 8pm in the library. Anyway, this segment follows on from my previous post’s advice to ensure, where possible, you get out of your flat. When cafes open they provide a great space to actually enjoy working in a cosy and simulating environment. Finding the right space with the right vibe can be tricky so I hope this helps.

  1. OQO- your Coffee Nook: this is currently the front runner for me. Their coffees are delicious, the aesthetic is so cool, you can usually get a seat AND the owner’s beautiful dog can often be found there which makes the whole experience 100000x better. https://www.instagram.com/oqocafe/

  2. August 21: they take pastry and coffee to the next level and also do a banging sandwich. The dark interior makes for a secluded and sensual site to cram in some knowledge. https://www.instagram.com/august_21cafe/

  3. Leo’s Beanery: descend down the stairs to this little place, take your seat (if you can find one), order yourself the eggs Benedict and you will not be disappointed. Once fuelled, this snug tavern will motivate you to get stuff done!! https://www.instagram.com/leosbeanery/

  4. Cairngorm Coffee, Melville Place: A bright, inviting and spacious choice of location that specialises in providing a mouth-watering grilled cheese. Unlike other places, the white interior keeps you awake and inspired to work, work, work. https://www.instagram.com/cairngormcoffeeco/

  5. Word of Mouth: I’m rather obsessed with this little corner café down on Leith walk. The staff are so friendly and the window seats are an ideal perch from which to craft a masterpiece of an essay. Their breakfasts are ridiculously good and they provide an epic cup of coffee. https://www.facebook.com/Word-of-Mouth-Cafe-leith-227636163937635/

  6. Black medicine: bit of a generic choice because studying at Edinburgh University essentially translates into having bashed out a study session or five in this rustic and cosy cafe. However it is the don of study cafes for good reason; the vibe is highly compatible with essay writing or reading and their food is the perfect study companion. Get there early though as this place fills up quick!! (theres actually a pic of me on their insta from back in January 2020) https://www.instagram.com/blackmedicinecoffee/

  7. Leaf and Bean: perfect for those in the Marchmont and Morningside area. If you’re partial to an almond croissant then check this place out. https://www.instagram.com/leafandbeanedinburgh/

Happy coffee drinking when the time comes! Not long now.
